Rising Afro-soul Star from Dutywa inspires through music & motivation

DUTYWA– From the quiet village of Ngxakaxha in Dutywa emerges a vibrant new voice in Afro-soul Nokuthula’Thula-diva‘ Mzendana, a singer-songwriter, motivational speaker and master of ceremonies(MC) who is quickly capturing hearts with her inspiring journey and powerful voice.

Mzendana discovered her love for music at a young age, often singing Brenda Fassie songs and performing for her classmates at Bonkolo High School.

“When there were ceremonies in our village, I was always the one chosen to sing,” she recalls. After matric, Mzendana studied at King Hintsa College before continuing her education at Blue Ribbon College in East London.

It was during this time that she began entering music auditions, hoping to take her talent to the next level. “At first, I sang any kind of music but since I was active in church, I tried gospel so that people could support me. However, that didn’t work out, so I returned to Afro-soul the music that truly speaks to my heart,” she explains.

Her big break came on 04 October 2024, when she entered a Khozi FM competition that called on local artists to write songs about road safety. Mzendana won the contest and with the prize money, she recorded her single ‘Suzulisa’ with producer Siyabonga Hlekani. “‘Suzulisa’ is about men who refuse to pay lobola,” she explains. “It’s a story that many women can relate to.”

Inspired by the legendary Simphiwe Dana, Mzendana says her mentor’s music continues to guide her artistic journey. “Simphiwe Dana has been my biggest inspiration. Her music pushes me to keep going,” she says. But music is not her only gift. Mzendana is also a motivational speaker, a passion she discovered in high school. “Teachers used to call me to speak to Grade 12 learners during school ceremonies. At first, I thought they just wanted me to talk because I liked speaking in front of people. Later, I realised it was a gift from God not every young person can stand in front of elders and inspire them,” she said.

Looking ahead, Mzendana dreams big. “In the years to come, I see myself releasing more albums, winning awards and collaborating with top artists,” she says confidently.

Furthermore, “Most importantly, I want to have my own recording studio so I can keep writing and help other artists grow,” Mzendana.

With her talent, faith and determination, Nokuthula Mzendana is proving that even from the smallest village, great voices can rise and inspire the world.
