R8.9 Million road maintenance project launched in Mbhashe

DUTYWA- The Eastern Cape Department of Transport in partnership with Mbhashe Local Municipality has introduced a new contractor to undertake a R8.9 million road maintenance programme over a 12-month period. The meeting was held on 17 April in Dutywa.

The project will focus on priority roads across the municipality and will include essential maintenance works such as pothole repairs, road blading, structural maintenance, stormwater management and bridge repairs.

Municipal officials said the programme is aimed at improving road conditions and ensuring safer and more reliable access for communities.

Executive Mayor Dr Samkelo Janda said the initiative plays a key role in strengthening service delivery and supporting socio-economic development.“A well-maintained road network is fundamental to socio-economic development. It ensures that communities have access to schools, healthcare facilities, and economic opportunities,” said Dr Janda.

He then added that, “This investment is intended to improve connectivity and support growth across Mbhashe.”

The municipality further noted that the project is expected to create job opportunities and support skills development, contributing to local economic growth.

In addition the programme forms part of ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and enhance service delivery across the region.
