EAST LONDON- The heart of Eastern Cape rugby is beating stronger than ever with the official launch of the 2025 Border Rugby Union Top Ten Tournament (BRUTTEN), held at the Buffalo Club in East London on Monday, 08 September.
This highly anticipated competition, known affectionately as BRUTTEN, brings together the top 10 rugby clubs in the Border region for a 10-week battle on the field. With grassroots development at its core and a grand prize of R30,000 at stake BRUTTEN is poised to reignite the province’s passion for rugby and showcase the depth of local talent.

Tournament Chairperson Sizwe Sodinga emphasised the broader vision behind the tournament. “We want to make sure that rugby are the winners of the day. This is about more than competition it’s about growth, development and community.”
Sodinga noted that, despite past struggles within the Border Rugby Union, this tournament marks a new beginning.
The union, historically known for producing exceptional talent including several black Springboks sees BRUTTEN as a platform to develop future stars.
Kicking off this Saturday at Police Park, the tournament is set to deliver electrifying action across local venues.

“It’s 10 teams, one mission, a trophy and a R30,000 prize,” said Tournament Director Sindile Mayende. “We appreciate the sponsors for putting it together.”
Key sponsors include Castle Lager, FNB and Umbro, the latter providing kits for all participating teams a move praised for leveling the playing field and boosting team morale.

Furthermore speaking on behalf of FNB, Banking Area Manager Monwabisi Poswa highlighted the importance of supporting local sport. “As sponsors, we’re not just investing in a tournament we’re investing in people, communities and the future of the sport we all love,” he said. Poswa added, “We’re excited about the fun, the crowds, and the opportunities this brings for young players.”
In addition one of the players eager to make his mark is Khanya Solani from the All Blacks club. “Our aim was to win the Premier League, but it didn’t go well,” Solani admitted. “We fought for our place and now we’re here to win it. That’s our goal.”
The tournament will culminate in a grand finale on 08 November 2025, promising a celebration of sport, spirit and community engagement.
With thousands expected to attend, local businesses are also gearing up for a boost, adding further energy to an already thrilling sporting calendar.
With unity, determination and a deep love for the game the BRUTTEN Cup marks a bold new era for Border Rugby one where the Eastern Cape’s passion for the sport takes center stage once again.
