Quigney Culture Festival set to boost local economy & Urban Renewal

EAST LONDON– The Quigney Culture Festival set to take place on Saturday, 28 February 2026 at the corner of Caxton and Burns Streets in Quigney in East London bringing together live music, food, creative enterprise and public storytelling in a ticketed, culture-led urban festival.

Anchored by House 87, a Quigney-based cultural restaurant and events venue the festival coincides with the venue’s fourth year of operation and forms part of a broader effort to position culture as a practical driver of local economic activity, employment creation and place-based regeneration.

Event organiser who is also House87 Director Thando Thomas says the festival has been shaped by lessons learned over several years of operating in an inner-city environment. House 87 has hosted artists, supported interns, employed young people and worked with local suppliers, while also facing challenges common to small and medium enterprises in urban areas, including a break-in in May 2025.

“The festival responds to a clear limitation, Individual businesses can only grow to a point if the surrounding area does not grow with them. The Quigney Culture Festival tests how coordinated culture activity can support broader urban regeneration,” emphasised Thomas.

Furthmore from an economic and scale perspective, the 2026 festival will feature up to 20 curated stalls, prioritising local food vendors, creatives and small businesses. Attendance is estimated at around 1,500 ticketed visitors, with direct employment created for approximately 80 to 120 people, including event staff, technical crews, security personnel, creatives and youth assistants.

In addition Thomas emphasised that he anticipate indirect economic benefits for suppliers, transport services, accommodation providers and hospitality businesses in and around Quigney.

The controlled number of stalls and capped attendance have been intentionally designed to protect quality, enhance visitor experience and ensure sustainable revenue circulation among participants.Beyond economic impact, the festival aims to build a positive place identity for Quigney, foster cultural pride, create safe and visible shared public experiences and demonstrate how aligned action between businesses, artists, institutions and communities can translate into measurable outcomes.

The festival is curated as a managed, ticketed event operating within a defined footprint, with coordinated safety and city-management protocols in place.

The Quigney Culture Festival is supported by the National Arts Council as a major funding partner, alongside private sector and local business collaborators including Medal Paints and the Cortex Hub.
