Rural school celebrates 75 years of academic achievement

QOBOQOBO– The HH Majiza Senior Secondary School in Mkhubiso village in Qoboqobo celebrated a major milestone on 21st November 2025, marking 75 years of serving the community as a centre of learning, leadership and rural development.

Founded in 1950 by the late Mzanywa Hobert Herald Majiza, the school has grown into a vital institution in the Middledrift Circuit. It remains as the only school in the area offering Mathematics and Physical Science, giving rural learners access to subjects critical for tertiary studies and modern careers.

Despite operating in a rural environment, the school has maintained strong academic performance, with pass rates of 85 % in 2022, 86.4 % in 2023 and 83.3 % in 2024. These achievements reflect the school’s commitment to academic excellence and its ongoing role in uplifting the community.

In partnership with the Eastern Cape Department of Education (EC DoE), the school hosted a commemorative programme that included the unveiling of a bust of its founder. Early alumni Sefako Poho (Class of 1953) and Zola Tshiaka (Class of 1956) attended, underscoring the school’s long‑standing legacy.

The celebration received a further boost when the Eastern Cape Gambling Board(ECGB), along with private‑sector partners, donated R100 000 to purchase Mathematics, Science and Technology kits for learners.

Head of Communications at ECGB, Luvuyo Tshoko said the investment aims to strengthen practical learning. “We want learners to study practically using the material provided instead of always studying through books. We are happy with the results the school is producing,” Tshoko emphasised.

Furthmore, the institution Learner Representative Council(LRC) president Avuzwa Magade welcomed the donation and called for improved infrastructure. “We are grateful for the Maths and Science kit, it will help us improve our performance. We would also appreciate it if the government could rebuild some of the classrooms.”

In addition EC DoE Assistant Director in partnerships Thozama Hela encouraged learners to uphold high standards, “No learner must achieve less than a 75 % pass rate with this celebration.”

School Governing Body(SGB) member Likhona Mtshemla pledged to safeguard the resources. “This celebration shows we are seen. We will protect the kit that was given to us.”

As HH Majiza enters its next chapter, the school continues to stand as a beacon of opportunity and pride for rural Eastern Cape.
