MDANTSANE- Ulwazi High School community has welcomed the return of principal Mihlali Edmond Makhalima to his curriculum and academic responsibilities, bringing an end to months of uncertainty surrounding his position at the Mdantsane school.
Makhalima’s return comes after he was placed on precautionary suspension in October 2025 following allegations concerning the use of school funds.
The matter attracted widespread attention after an investigation into the school’s financial affairs raised questions about more than R1 Million in expenditure over a 16-month period.
According to reports, significant amounts were spent at restaurants, while substantial cash withdrawals and transactions involving retail and liquor outlets were also flagged for investigation.
The investigation also raised concerns about the National School Nutrition Programme at the school, with the school reportedly carrying debts linked to the feeding programme.
The Eastern Cape Department of Education confirmed Makhalima’s suspension at the time and said investigations and legal processes would follow.
Makhalima, however, provided explanations for some of the questioned transactions. He said, among other things, that purchases from fast-food outlets were connected to lengthy disciplinary committee meetings where members were provided with meals.
He also disputed the interpretation of some transactions involving a liquor outlet, saying the establishment also operated as a butchery.
The controversy did not diminish his standing among sections of the Ulwazi community.
In February, the Daily Dispatch reported that some parents were pushing for his reinstatement, arguing that the school had experienced difficulties during his absence.
The school has also maintained a strong academic record under Makhalima’s leadership. Ulwazi achieved a 100% matric pass rate in 2024 and recorded a 98.3% pass rate in 2025.
In a statement issued by Ulwazi High School on 02 September 2026 emphasis that, the community said his leadership, experience and commitment to academic excellence were particularly important as the school prepares for the final examinations.
“His return will strengthen teaching and learning, inspire educators and learners, and contribute to improved academic performance,” the statement said.
The community further said his return would help restore confidence, unity and pride within the school and the wider community.
For educators and learners, the immediate focus is expected to be on teaching and learning, particularly as Grade 12 learners approach their final examinations.
The Ulwazi community said it was looking forward to a new chapter under Makhalima’s leadership, with a renewed emphasis on academic excellence and the continued improvement of the school.
“Ulwazi High School looks forward to continued growth, excellence, and success under his leadership,” the statement said.
