TikTok star Mak’Sablela has SA laughing

MAKHANDA- Meet Mak’Sablela. Meet Sablela. Meet Dad Max. These hilariously distinct characters all played by one incredibly talented student are quickly becoming household names in South Africa’s digital comedy scene.

Olwethu Ncapayi, a 22-year-old Rhodes University student, is capturing hearts (and timelines) with his witty, culturally rich Xhosa comedy skits on TikTok, where he’s already garnered over 800,000 followers and counting.

Born and raised in Makhanda, Ncapayi is not only a rising social media star he’s also a dedicated student pursuing a double major in Journalism & Media Studies and African Languages at Rhodes University.

His unique blend of academic insight and authentic humor gives his content a depth that resonates far beyond surface-level laughs.“I grew up surrounded by stories, culture and the vibrant energy of a Xhosa household,” says Ncapayi. “Comedy is how I share that it’s storytelling with a punchline.”

From impersonating stern but lovable parents to hilariously exaggerated aunties, Ncapayi’s content paints a vivid portrait of everyday Eastern Cape life.Furthermore his skits are not only funny they serve as cultural snapshots, bridging generations and celebrating language and identity.

In addition Olwethu is more than just a comedian. He is also a committed tutor within the School of Journalism and Media Studies at Rhodes and is passionate about media’s power to spark social change. Whether through documentary filmmaking, podcast hosting or short-form skits, Ncapayi approaches media as a tool for empowerment.

“Media shapes how we see ourselves and each other,” he explains. “I want to create content that not only entertains but also educates and uplifts.”

As he balances studies, tutoring, and a rapidly growing online presence, Ncapayi remains grounded in his roots and driven by a clear purpose: to represent his culture with pride, and to use laughter as a unifying language.
