Eastern Cape learners shine at provincial environmental awards

MBIZANA– The future of environmental conservation in the Eastern Cape looks promising, thanks to the outstanding efforts of learners celebrated at the 2025 Provincial Environmental Awards, hosted by the Eastern Cape Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT) at the Wild Coast Sun Hotel in Bizana on 18th September 2025.

The prestigious event honoured schools and learners who have demonstrated innovation, commitment and leadership in promoting sustainability and environmental responsibility. This year’s awards were held under the inspiring theme; ‘My Environment, My Right, My Responsibility Act Now for the Sustainability.’

Delivering the keynote address MEC for Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Nonkqubela Pieters applauded the learners’ efforts and highlighted the significance of the awards. “The Awards give practical expression to DEDEAT’s environmental management pillars; Climate Change Response, Biodiversity Conservation, Waste Management and the Circular Economy and Sustainable Resource Use,” said Pieters.

“With that, let the competition begin! Learners will showcase their creativity and commitment through plays and presentations,” MEC added.

Furthermore the awards serve as a platform to showcase the power of youth in environmental activism and to recognise the critical role schools play in building a sustainable future. Through vibrant performances, educational presentations, and green initiatives, learners conveyed strong messages about protecting their environment.

Among the standout achievers was Nkulisa Senior Primary School, based in Mzimvubu, which clinched first place in the primary school category. Mzamba Comprehensive High School secured second place, earning praise for their impactful environmental campaign.

As a municipality, we remain committed to supporting initiatives that inspire young people to take the lead in protecting our planet,” said Mafumbatha.

The Provincial Environmental Awards not only recognise excellence but also aim to foster a lasting culture of environmental awareness and responsibility.

DEDEAT’s continued engagement with schools signals a proactive approach to nurturing environmental champions from a young age. As the Eastern Cape faces growing environmental challenges, the energy and dedication displayed by its youth offer a beacon of hope for a greener, more sustainable province.
