EAST LONDON- In a vibrant celebration of African culture, music and community the 6th annual Afrika Unite Cultural International Festival(AUCIF) brought East London to life on 15 December 2024 at Jan Smuts Stadium in East London. Under the theme ‘One United Africa,‘ the festival was a resounding success, attracting thousands of music lovers, cultural enthusiasts and community members to the Jan Smuts Stadium. The air was electric as the crowd grooved to the rhythms of talented artists, to name a few like Lloyiso, Dumza Maswana, Nkosazana Daughter and Betusile Mcinga.
The energy was intense as the audience sang along and danced in a show of unity and solidarity. Attendees of the AUCIF shared their enthusiasm for the event, highlighting its role in promoting unity and celebration among Africans.
One of the attendees at the event Andile Jidani said, “It’s a vibe! This event has united us as Africans.” Aya Jidani echoed this sentiment stating that, “Exactly, it’s a vibe! We don’t have to worry about who’s watching us while dancing. We’re able to enjoy ourselves with our friends.” Bulumko Ndandane noted, “Music unites a lot of people regardless of gender or race, it’s amazing to see such diversity in one place.”
In addition Production Manager of the South African Gospel Recognition Awards(SAGRAs) Xolani Ntombela expressed his support for the event, saying, “We’re supporting Luzuko Khohli the project manager of AUCIF, we didn’t expect such a massive turnout and it’s a pleasant surprise.”
Furthermore the event was supported by Eastern Cape Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture and Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency.
According to AUCIF Media Manager Sinethemba Gayiza, the event has successfully achieved its purpose of promoting unity among Africans. Speaking to the press Gayiza said, “This festival was launched in 2018, during a time of xenophobic tensions in South Africa looking at the diverse crowd in attendance, I am proud to say that it is serving its purpose. The festival has attracted a broad range of people, not only from the Xhosa community or fans of Dumza Maswana but also supporters of Nkosazana Daughter and other performing artists.”
In addition, the festival also featured an exhibition soccer match between Kaizer Chiefs fans led by Man-B and Orlando Pirates fans led by Qhawe, adding to the excitement and camaraderie of the event.
Zuko’s kitchen founder Zukiswa Nqolombe expressed her delight at the positive response to her products at the AUCIF, “It’s beautiful to see people buying and supporting my business, especially since this is my first time participating in this event.”
The AUCIF came to a close leaving behind a trail of joy, unity and celebration. It has once again proven itself to be a highlight of East London’s cultural calendar, promoting unity, celebrating diversity and showcasing the best of African talent.
