UFH career day opening doors for Law students

EAST LONDON- The University of Fort Hare’s(UFH) Faculty of Law recently hosted a career day for its students, providing them with valuable insights into potential career paths and opportunities.Law career day took place on 11th April 2025 at UFH East London campus.

In attendance some tailored renowned law firms across the region such as Smith Tabata attorneys, Tshiki attorneys including National Consumer Commission(NCC) to mention few.

Final-year law student at the institution Asisipho Mbaxa expressed her gratitude for the career day, statingthat, “I gained contacts of potential employers and learned about the National Prosecuting Authority(NPA). I’m part of several organizations and today I learned more about the NPA, I appreciate what UFH did for us.” Another final-year student, Ophola Mashalaba, shared her motivation for studying law at the institution stating, “I chose law because I come from East London’s Scenery Park an area with a high crime rate. I want to bring change to my community.”

Furthermore, Deputy Dean in the Faculty of Law in UFH Dr. Simphiwe Bidie emphasized the faculty’s commitment to benefiting its students saying, “Today’s event is a regular occurrence where we invite stakeholders to pitch their offerings and what students can expect.”

In addition Director Kara-lee Swartz-Beets from Smith Tabata Law Firm explained their presence stating, “We’re here to inform students about our candidate attorney program the application process and interviews. We also want to showcase the aspects of law we offer and our firm’s structure.” Candidate attorney at Smith Tabata attorneys Megan Vengajellum shared tips with students advising, “When applying to law firms include relevant information in your Curriculum Vitae(CV) and structure it properly.”

In addition according to the spokesperson of National Consumer Commission(NCC) Pheto Ntaba, “NCC in collaboration with other regulators in the consumer protection space supported UFH career day. This initiative underscores the commission’s commitment to nurturing future professionals in consumer protection.”

Furthermore, the commission has an established relationship with UFH contributing to the university’s consumer protection law course. This partnership highlights the commission’s influence in shaping the next generation of consumer protection advocates.

Through this engagement, the commission aims to provide students with valuable insights into career opportunities in consumer protection while also fostering a deeper understanding of consumer rights and responsibilities.The career day provided students with essential guidance and networking opportunities, empowering them to make informed decisions about their future careers.
