Rhodes runs dry as water tankers blocked in student shutdown

MAKHANDA- Rhodes University’s Executive Leadership is gravely concerned about the impact of the ongoing campus shutdown by students, saying essential services needed for student health and wellbeing have been cut off.

According to the statement issued by the Rhodes University on 30 September 2026, the Executive has made repeated appeals to the Student Representative Council (SRC) to allow essential services staff to access campus and residences.

The institution emphasised that the services at risk include the preparation and serving of meals to students, cleaning of student residences, other essential facilities and the provision of water to the campus.

“Despite these appeals, we have not been able to secure the necessary access for these services to continue,” the statement reads.

The university further flagged restricted access for water tankers to refill supplies, noting that the situation presents a serious risk to students living in residences.

While respecting students right to raise grievances, the Executive cautioned that the ongoing disruption is placing both students and staff in a difficult situation.

Engagement with student leadership through proper institutional channels is continuing, with the university expressing hope for a constructive and sustainable resolution to the impasse.
