From science learner to accounting graduate

MTHATHA- A former science learner has shown that where a student starts does not necessarily determine where they finish.

A Financial Information Systems graduate Sisanda Mthangana, graduated from iYunivesithi Walter Sisulu on 29th September 2026 after completing a Diploma in Financial Information Systems with 16 distinctions and an overall average of 74%.

Mthangana’s achievement is particularly notable because she entered higher education without an accounting background.

She had studied science at high school and had no prior knowledge of accounting when she began her tertiary studies.

Faced with unfamiliar concepts and challenging modules, she turned to the university’s Tutorship Programme for academic support and mentorship.

Through consistent effort and determination, her confidence and academic performance improved, eventually culminating in an impressive academic record.

“Starting the qualification without an Accounting background and eventually graduating with 16 distinctions and a 74% overall average made me realise that my starting point did not determine my outcome,” Mthangana said.

She said stepping outside her comfort zone had also helped her discover abilities she did not know she possessed.

Mthangana encouraged other students not to allow their previous academic results or backgrounds to define what they can achieve. “Do not let your past results limit you,” she said.

With her diploma now completed, Mthangana plans to further her studies by pursuing an Advanced Diploma in Business Analysis.
