Fort Hare goes digital as Graduates get certificates at the click of a button

DIKENI- The University of Fort Hare’s (UFH) academic credentials have moved into a new digital space, with Spring 2026 graduates set to become the first cohort to access secure electronic certificates.

This move comes after the initiative forms part of a broader shift in how the institution uses technology to improve access to services and strengthen the security of academic records.

In a statement issued by the institution states that on 01 October 2026, the project marks a significant milestone in advancing Strategic Objective 10: Digital Transformation of Business Processes.

The institution emphasised that, the new system would provide graduates with secure electronic certificates and confirmation letters containing security features that allow authorised third parties to verify authenticity.

Acting Registrar at UFH Zwelidumile Mditshwa said the development signals the university’s shift towards technology-driven services.

“This milestone reflects the University’s commitment to embracing technology-driven solutions that improve service delivery, enhance governance, safeguard the integrity of our qualifications and provide greater convenience to our graduates and stakeholders,” he said.

The rollout will be integrated into the October 2026 graduation.

Publishing will trigger an automated email directing graduates to the portal. The university said the portal follows months of detailed preparation from data validation to mapping complex academic administration requirements.

An Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Department official, Pelisa Mgedezi said the focus was on easing processes for users.

“As ICT, we are always looking at how we can digitise and automate processes to make work easier for our users,” she said.

The university further flagged that the platform will not replace hard-copy certificates. Qualifying graduates will still receive physical certificates, while the digital version provides an additional secure way to share qualifications with employers.

Engagement between ICT and the Registrar’s Office is continuing, with the university expressing scope for future services, including requests for replacement certificates without physically visiting campus.
