MTHATHA- Dozens of families across the OR Tambo District have been left homeless after strong winds swept through several communities, damaging houses in all five local municipalities, on 11 May 2026.
The OR Tambo District Municipality said the severe weather affected 32 wards in Ingquza Hill, King Sabata Dalindyebo, Kumkani Mhlontlo, Nyandeni and Port St Johns municipalities.

According to preliminary assessments, 95 households were affected by the strong winds with 62 families left homeless while another 33 homes suffered partial damage.
According to OR Tambo District Municipality spokesperson Ncebakazi Kolwane emphasised that, “The OR Tambo District Municipality has noted with deep concern the widespread damage caused by strong winds that have affected communities across all five local municipalities within the district.”
Displaced residents are currently being sheltered by neighbours and relatives as municipal disaster management teams continue with verification processes and damage assessments across the district.
Furthmore municipal officials warned that the number of affected households could rise as assessments continue in remote and hard-hit areas.
“The municipality, together with relevant stakeholders and disaster management teams, is coordinating relief interventions and working tirelessly to provide the necessary support to affected communities,” Kolwane added.
Residents have also been urged to remain cautious during adverse weather conditions, avoid unsafe or damaged structures, and report emergencies to authorities.
In addition the municipality extended its sympathies to affected families and communities battling the aftermath of the destructive winds.
“The OR Tambo District Municipality extends its sincere sympathies to all affected families and communities during this difficult time,” she said.
