Rhodes University to honor Justice Lex Mpati with law building naming ceremony

MAKHANDA- Rhodes University situated in Makhanda is set to pay tribute to one of its most distinguished alumni and former Chancellor, Justice Lex Mpati by naming its law building after him.

The ceremony is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, 26 August 2025, in Makhanda as part of the university’s 120-year celebrations.

Justice Mpati’s remarkable journey from a legal clerk to President of the Supreme Court of Appeal is a testament to his dedication and hard work.

His commitment to social justice, integrity and excellence aligns perfectly with Rhodes University’s principles. As Chancellor, he championed transformation and justice, leaving a lasting legacy at the university.He served as President of the Supreme Court of Appeal and acting judge in the Constitutional Court, Chaired the Commission of Inquiry into allegations of impropriety at the Public Investment Corporation (PIC).

Furthermore Mpati served for 13 years, promoting transformation and justice, demonstrated a deep commitment to constitutional values, equality and human dignity.In addition the naming ceremony will bring together prominent legal figures, judicial leaders and valued alumni to celebrate Justice Mpati’s legacy and inspire future generations of law students.

To add, Rhodes University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sizwe Mabizela, praises Justice Mpati as ‘a father figure’ and ‘a source of wisdom’ who inspires students to use law as a tool for positive social change.

This recognition is a fitting tribute to Justice Mpati’s outstanding contributions to the legal field and his commitment to social justice. The ceremony will be a celebration of his legacy and a reminder of the importance of using law to promote positive social change.
