UFH state-of-the-art student life centre to morden EL

EAST LONDON- The University of Fort Hare (UFH) is set to revolutionize campus life and the city’s Central Business District (CBD) with a multi-million rand Student Life Centre in East London. As of 13 August 2025, preparations for the landmark development have reached advanced stages.

The facility, supported by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), will bring together learning, leisure and commercial activities in a cutting-edge all-in-one facility.

According to UFH Executive Director for Infrastructure and Technology, Thembakazi Ngxabani, “This development is not only an investment in modern infrastructure and economic stimulation, but also a bold step towards creating an inclusive, student centred urban campus.”

The Student Life Centre is expected to spark further investment, foster public-private partnerships, and revitalize a historically underdeveloped section of East London. After 18 months of intensive planning, including consultations with stakeholders and municipal partners the project has received formal endorsement from the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality (BCMM) and Buffalo City Metropolitan Development Agency (BCMDA).

In a statement issued by the institution emphasized, “A crucial early priority is the relocation of the informal settlement currently occupying the site. BCMM has confirmed its commitment to supporting the relocation process, with most residents indicating willingness to relocate contingent on the provision of a suitable nearby alternative.”

In addition this development marks a significant milestone for UFH and the city of East London, promising to bring about economic stimulation, modern infrastructure and a revitalized urban campus.
