MATETIELE- Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs(CoGTA) Velenkosini Hlabisa joined the community of Phamotse village in Matatiele on 04 January 2025 to welcome back 114 young men who had successfully completed their initiation rites. “The safe return of initiates from anywhere in the country ensures that our culture is not dying,” Hlabisa emphasized highlighting the significance of preserving cultural traditions.
Additionally, Hlabisa also addressed concerns surrounding the safety of initiates urging stakeholders to work together to find long-term solutions.
“We must not lose sight of the fact that these late initiates are human beings with loved ones. They also have the right to life like all of us. To this effect, it can not be business as usual,”Hlabisa said, referencing the recent deaths of 28 initiates in the province.
He warned those who disregarded the Customary Initiation Act that they would face the law. Eastern Cape MEC for CoGTA Zolile Williams echoed Minister Hlabisa’s sentiments, stressing the need for collective participation to ensure safe initiation practices.
Furthermore, Hlabisa extended condolences to the bereaved families on behalf of the government, saying, “We have lost lives. Therefore, we can not go on as if it is business as usual. Something drastic must happen to protect our youth who undertake this important cultural and traditional journey.
“As the community celebrated the return of their young men Minister Hlabisa’s words served as a reminder of the importance of balancing tradition with accountability and safeguarding the lives of South Africa’s youth.
