Newly appointed EC Commissioner on the ground

KUGOMPO CITY– A high-impact, multi-agency anti-crime operation led by Eastern Cape MEC for Department of Community Safety Xolile Nqatha, has resulted in multiple arrests and a strong show of law enforcement presence across KuGompo City.

The operation, conducted in partnership with newly appointed Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata, brought together members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), Immigration officials, Provincial Traffic authorities and the Liquor Board.

Teams targeted known crime hotspots including California, Vikings, Davaldo, Ndosi, Duncan Village and surrounding areas during a coordinated overnight raid that began on 16 April and concluded in the early hours of 17 April 2026.

Authorities reported that eight problematic liquor outlets were visited in Duncan Village and nearby areas, while compliance inspections were conducted at establishments in California and Southernwood, where no violations were recorded.

During the operation, 30 undocumented foreign nationals were verified, leading to the arrest of 25 individuals. Law enforcement officers also made several arrests related to drunk driving, administering 17 blood alcohol tests in the process.

In addition, three suspects were arrested for possession of ammunition and another three for drug-related offences. Two more individuals were taken into custody for failing to properly safeguard a firearm.

Officials say the operation forms part of broader efforts to stabilise communities affected by crime and to enforce compliance with liquor and immigration regulations.

Speaking after the operation, MEC Nqatha issued a firm warning to those involved in criminal activity.“No criminal activities will be tolerated in the Eastern Cape including in Buffalo City Metro,” he said.

Authorities have indicated that similar operations will continue in identified hotspot areas as part of ongoing efforts to improve safety and restore public confidence.

Residents in affected communities have welcomed the increased visibility of law enforcement, expressing cautious optimism that sustained interventions will contribute to safer neighbourhoods.
