GQEBERHA – In a remarkable feat, the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has successfully docked one of the world’s largest container vessels at the deepwater Port of Ngqura on Thursday, 3rd July 2025.
The MSC Nicola Mastro, measuring 400m in width, is making her maiden call to South African commercial seaports.
Local marine pilot Olwethu Mtsewu-Sisilana is expertly guiding the vessel into port, marking a significant milestone in her career. Hailing from Qanda village in the rural area of Xesi, Olwethu began her maritime journey through a Transnet bursary in 2008.

According to TNPA statement emphasized that, “A team of four tugs from the Ports of Port Elizabeth and Ngqura is providing crucial support, showcasing the efficiency of the Nelson Mandela Bay port complex. This impressive operation highlights the capabilities of the Port of Ngqura and its team.”
The docking of the MSC Nicola Mastro is a testament to the port’s ability to handle the largest vessels in the world, solidifying its position as a key player in global trade.
According to TNPA Acting Executive Phyllis Difeto, this achievement has the potential to transform shipping patterns. “Our ability to dock one of the world’s largest container ships has the potential to transform shipping patterns. It positions the Port of Ngqura as the key container transshipment hub, within the global and Saharan Africa markets,” she said.

This milestone underscores the Port of Ngqura’s growing importance in the global shipping industry and its potential to drive economic growth and development in the region.
