LIBODE– From a shy young woman in Libode to a thriving home‑based baker in East London, 33‑year‑old Ayanda Deyi is proving that passion, courage and faith can turn a dream into a delicious reality.
Entirely self‑taught and without any formal culinary training, Ayanda’s journey began while working a retail job. Her cakes quickly drew praise from customers, many urging her to start her own business. Although fear and self‑doubt held her back for years, she finally took a leap of faith in 2022 and launched Ayanda’s Spot Cakes.

Ayanda openly describes herself as naturally shy, a trait that made selling and marketing a challenge. But she says prayer has been her guiding force, helping her step beyond her comfort zone.
“God gave me answers to my doubts,” she shared reflecting on the faith that continues to anchor her progress.

What started as a simple side hustle baking cookies and small treats after work has now grown into a full‑time business.
Operating from her home in East London, Ayanda does not yet have a physical storefront but she has a clear vision for the road ahead. “I see myself owning a bakery or coffee shop where I can sell an array of cakes and scones, showcasing my skills to a broader audience,” she said.
For now, Ayanda relies on social media to reach customers. She advertises her creations on Facebook, where clients place orders and collect them directly from her home.

This community‑focused approach has proven effective: she is fully booked almost every week. One of her proudest achievements to date is successfully baking a wedding cake, a milestone that affirmed her growing confidence and skill.
Despite steady demand, Ayanda says the journey is not without challenges. Complaints, though discouraging at times, have become valuable lessons.
“They help me work better,” she noted, highlighting her commitment to constant improvement. With unwavering determination, an expanding customer base and a vision rooted in passion Ayanda’s future in the baking world looks as sweet as the cakes she creates.
