BIZANA– The streets and countryside of Bizana came alive on 28 September 2025, as the Kwelamampondo Half Marathon Challenge drew runners and spectators from across the region in a vibrant display of endurance, talent and community spirit.
Organised by the Lasuka Lahlala Athletic Club, the event featured race categories ranging from 5km to 21km, offering a platform for both seasoned athletes and enthusiastic amateurs. The marathon, set against a mix of gravel and tar roads did more than test physical limits it also promoted youth engagement and aimed to steer local youth towards positive recreational pursuits, contributing to efforts in crime reduction.

Event organiser Mondli Mkhonza praised the high level of competition, “The competition was fierce, with athletes pushing themselves to new limits.”
Nape Letlasa from Lesotho claimed victory in the men’s category, while Happiness Nokukhanya Memela from KwaZulu-Natal triumphed in the women’s race, both demonstrating exceptional grit and determination.

The success of the marathon was bolstered by strong community and corporate support. Sponsors such as; CCCC-Mecsa JV, SANRAL, SMEC, DAMIAN CONTRACTORS and CYCLE CIVILS PROJECTS played a pivotal role in bringing the event to life.
The Mzamba Taxi Owners Association also earned special praise for providing free transportation for athletes, ensuring broad participation across the region.
“Their commitment to supporting athletic endeavours is truly commendable. Without them, the competition would not have happened,” Mkhonza added.

Beyond the finish line, the Kwelamampondo Half Marathon Challenge was a celebration of unity, perseverance and local pride. With growing momentum, plans are already in motion for the 2026 edition, tentatively scheduled for September 2026, pending approval from Athletic Transkei.
“This is more than just a race; it’s a celebration of community spirit, athleticism and human achievement,” Mkhonza said, hinting at bigger ambitions for the event’s future.
As Bizana continues to place itself on the sporting map, the Kwelamampondo Half Marathon Challenge stands as a beacon of positive change and shared triumph.
