Ngcobo writes a new chapter with literacy day launch

NGCOBO- The Eastern Cape Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC) launched International Literacy Day celebrations on 08 September 2025 in Deberha, near Ngcobo with a strong focus on literacy and community empowerment.

Learners from across the province participated in book review competitions, storytelling, quizzes and face painting highlighting the joy of reading and the importance of literacy in education and development.

The event also focused on strengthening book clubs in public libraries, helping to promote a sustained culture of reading in communities.

Furthermore, beyond literacy the event delivered essential government services directly to the people. Mobile units from the Department of Health, Home Affairs, South African Police Service (SAPS) and Dr AB Xuma Local Municipality Fire Department provided health checks, ID services, safety awareness, and emergency support all on site.

According to DSRAC communications, “This is about bringing services and knowledge closer to the people. Literacy is key to accessing opportunities.”

In addition International Literacy Day, established by UNESCO in 1966 aims to raise awareness around global literacy challenges and the power of reading to transform lives.

The two-day celebration continues today, 09 September with the MEC for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Sibulele Ngongo is expected to deliver the keynote address, reinforcing the province’s commitment to education and community upliftment.
