LUSIKISIKI- The Eastern Cape Rural Development Agency(ECRDA) has joined forces with the Mpondoland Cannabis Belt Association to revolutionize the cannabis industry in Mpondoland on the 28th November 2024. This partnership, sealed at the Lusikisiki Resource Centre aims to elevate the region’s traditional cannabis cultivation practices into a thriving commercial enterprise.
With a focus on preserving local landrace strains and exploring their potential for medicinal, recreational and industrial applications, this collaboration sets the stage for significant economic development in Mpondoland.
Supported by a coalition of government bodies and local municipalities, including key players in research and education, the initiative signals a united effort to unlock the region’s cannabis sector. Mpondoland’s rich history of cannabis cultivation, coupled with the global trend towards cannabis legalization, positions the region for a promising future.
The partnership’s objectives include empowering local farmers, creating employment opportunities, and attracting investments to drive rural prosperity. The ECRDA’s pivotal role underscores its commitment to uplifting rural communities in the Eastern Cape.
By enhancing production capabilities, providing training, and facilitating market access, the partnership aims to bolster the region’s cannabis value chain and ensure sustainable growth. Eastern Cape executive for intergrated programmes management at ECRDA Navy Mukonda emphasized the Mpondo people’s expertise in cannabis cultivation, highlighting the potential for job creation and economic advancement.
Eastern Cape chairperson of the Mpondoland cannibas belt association Vuyisile Dlamini, applauded the support from government agencies, recognizing the transformative impact on local farmers and the broader community. Aligned with South Africa’s vision to excel in the global cannabis market, Mpondoland’s unique resources and collaborative efforts are poised to drive economic transformation.
