Metro hands R6.9 Million pedestrian bridge in Mdantsane

MDANTSANE- Residents of Wards 14 in Mdantsane are celebrating the official handover of a new pedestrian bridge aimed at improving safety for learners and commuters crossing a busy roadway.

The R6.9 million structure was officially unveiled by Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality Executive Mayor Cllr. Princess Faku during a handover ceremony held on Wednesday, 27 May 2026.

Municipal officials, contractors and community members attended the event marking the completion of a project that residents say has been long overdue.

The bridge was developed through collaboration between the municipality and the community to address ongoing safety concerns along the route, which is frequently used by schoolchildren and pedestrians.

Speaking during the ceremony, Cllr. Faku said the project was prioritised to protect lives and improve mobility within the area.

“The purpose of this bridge is to ensure the safety of learners, pedestrians and the community at large when crossing this busy road,” she said.

She urged residents to use the bridge responsibly and work together to preserve the infrastructure for future generations.Faku also thanked contractors, municipal officials and members of the community who contributed to the successful completion of the project.

The pedestrian bridge is expected to significantly reduce the risk of accidents while improving access between the two wards, especially for daily commuters and school children.
