KUGOMPO CITY- A new business-focused initiative by Rotary District 9370 is seeking to revitalise the local economy by connecting entrepreneurs and professionals through purposeful networking.
Launched on Wednesday, 18 March at the SAFI Suites & Conference Centre in KuGompo City(formerly known as East London) the Rotary for Business event brought together small business owners, industry professionals and community stakeholders under the theme: Where purpose meets powerful business connections.

The initiative is designed to promote intentional networking, ethical business practices and international collaboration through the broader Rotary International network.
Incoming District Governor Dr. Melonie Gobel said the programme responds to the ongoing challenges faced by businesses in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“There is a clear need to support entrepreneurs and small businesses as they rebuild, by strengthening networks and creating opportunities for collaboration, we can help businesses grow and contribute meaningfully to their communities,” Gobel said.

She acknowledged persistent concerns such as crime and economic strain in KuGompo City but emphasised the importance of proactive, community-led solutions.
“Rather than focusing only on challenges, we must ask what positive change we can bring. Even small efforts, when combined, can have a significant impact,” she said.
Furthmore attendees described the event as a valuable platform for engagement and shared learning.

Founder of Santos Business Services, Esther Santos highlighted the role of collaboration in strengthening small enterprises.
“Running a business can be isolating, especially when trying to make a difference in the community,” she said. “Initiatives like this create space for connection and support, which is essential for growth.”

Santos also stressed the importance of accessible financial and advisory services, noting that many small businesses lack the resources to engage large firms but still require professional guidance.
With a focus on ‘networking with purpose’ and ‘business with integrity,’ organisers hope the initiative will expand across the region, creating sustained opportunities for collaboration and economic upliftment. The event structured approach to building meaningful professional relationships.
Organisers have encouraged business owners and professionals to participate in future sessions as part of a growing movement to strengthen East London’s business community.
