Faku reshuffles Mayoral Committee to tackle service delivery challenges

KUGOMPO CITY- Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality Executive Mayor Cllr. Princess Faku has announced a reconfiguration of the city’s Mayoral Committee, saying the move is aimed at strengthening governance and accelerating service delivery ahead of the 2026 local government elections.

Addressing councillors, municipal officials and residents at municipal chambers on 10th March 2026 at KuGompo City(formerly known as East London), Faku said the changes align with the priorities outlined in the African National Congress January 8 Statement, which declared 2026 the ‘year of decisive action’ to fix local government and transform the economy.

“The reconfiguration is an intervention to address persistent service delivery challenges and to ensure that the municipality remains stable and responsive to the needs of our residents,” Faku said.

She added that the ruling party had prioritised stabilising municipalities financially and administratively while ensuring reliable delivery of basic services, including water, electricity, sanitation, refuse removal, roads and broadband connectivity.

“In a local government election year, no effort should be spared. All energies must be directed towards addressing unresolved service delivery challenges and restoring the confidence of our citizens,” she said.

According to the mayor, the restructuring will also help align councillors expertise with key portfolios to improve oversight, accountability and implementation of municipal programmes.

In addition the move comes as Buffalo City works to implement national reforms requiring trading services such as water and sanitation, electricity and energy and solid waste management to operate as sustainable business units.

Compliance with these reforms will influence future grant funding from the National Treasury. The Mayoral Committee will also oversee the implementation of the municipality’s Audit Action Plan following findings by the Auditor-General of South Africa for the 2025 financial year, which highlighted issues relating to infrastructure projects, compliance and irregular expenditure.

Faku announced the following committee members: Zininzi Mtyingizane (Spatial Planning), Sakhumzi Caga (Human Settlements), Afrika Maxongo (Public Safety and Emergency Services), Amanda Mnyute (Local Economic Agencies Development), Amanda Ralasi (Sport, Recreation and Community Development), Bongiwe Sauli (Corporate Services), Yomelela Tyali (Finance), Malibongwe Mfazwe (Infrastructure and Energy), Mninawe Nyusile (Water and Sanitation) and Clara Morolong Yekiso (Solid Waste and Environment).
