WSU, KSD Municipality strengthen ties to shape Mthatha’s future

MTHATHA— Walter Sisulu University (WSU) and King Sabatha Dalindyebo (KSD) Local Municipality have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening collaboration aimed at positioning Mthatha as a fully integrated university town that drives inclusive socio-economic development.

WSU Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Dr Thandi Mgwebi on Tuesday continued her stakeholder engagement programme through a meet-and-greet session with KSD Local Municipality Mayor, Councillor Nyaniso Nelani and his delegation.

The engagement underscored a shared vision rooted in partnership, mutual benefit and a common purpose to strengthen relations between the municipality and the University.

Central to the discussions was the collective ambition to transform Mthatha into more than just a town that hosts a university, but into a vibrant university town where academic life, innovation, culture and community development are seamlessly integrated.

Dr Mgwebi emphasised the importance of a collaborative approach between WSU and the municipality, noting that the University’s expertise facilities and student capacity could play a critical role in addressing community challenges and supporting sustainable development initiatives.

“The transformation of Mthatha into a university town requires deliberate co-design between the University and the municipality, by leveraging WSU’s academic expertise, research capacity and student talent, we can help drive innovation, respond to social challenges and ensure that development remains student-centred and socially responsive,” said Dr Mgwebi.

Reflecting on the engagement, Mgwebi highlighted the value of strategic partnerships in optimising resources and unlocking opportunities for rural development, cultural advancement, innovation and improved service delivery.

“Leveraging the University’s resources and expertise to uplift communities, empower students and drive innovation through collaborative projects and transformative engagement is key to building a university of the future,” she said.

In addition the meeting also reaffirmed WSU’s commitment to meaningful, community-driven partnerships that contribute to local economic growth while enhancing the student experience and strengthening the social fabric of Mthatha.

Both parties expressed optimism that strengthened collaboration between WSU and the KSD Local Municipality would play a pivotal role in shaping Mthatha into a dynamic, inclusive and sustainable university town that benefits residents, students and the broader Eastern Cape region.
