Lubabalo Hayiya turns passion into a thriving fashion business

Lady GREY– From humble beginnings in Khwezi Naledi, Lady Grey fashion designer Lubabalo Honey Hayiya(33) has turned childhood curiosity into a growing fashion brand that’s gaining national attention.

Founder of LH Diamonds Clothing, Hayiya discovered his passion in 2005 when his mother started a curtain-making project. Inspired, he began altering trousers and decorating jeans for friends while still in primary school. “I saw fabric as a way to express myself,” he recalls.

After high school, Hayiya pursued formal training in Clothing Construction at Central Johannesburg College (CJC) and later studied fashion design at SewAfrica. His talent grew, but the journey was not without setbacks. “I faced discrimination, people mocked me, called me names, said fashion was for women,” he says. “It hurt and shook my confidence, I even considered becoming a traffic officer at one point.”

Despite the challenges, his passion pulled him back.

Furthmore in 2011, he began designing professionally. By 14 April 2015, LH Diamonds Clothing was officially registered becoming a platform to showcase his creativity and vision. Determined to grow the brand, Hayiya built his own studio and training space in Jabavu, Lady Grey.

“That’s when I realised the need for mentorship and youth development in fashion,” he said.

In addition LH Diamonds Clothing has built a strong following, known for its distinctive style and high quality. “Once clients wear LH Diamonds, they come back. Our clothes give them confidence,” said Hayiya.

He has dressed notable personalities including Uyanda from Big Brother, musician Ntando Wakwantu and SABC presenter Lilitha Ntsundwane to mention few.

Looking ahead, Hayiya plans to expand into a major city within the next five years, open a factory for mass production and create jobs for young designers. His 10-year goal is to see LH Diamonds in malls nationwide, competing with top fashion brands.

“I want to inspire others, especially rural youth, to follow their passion despite what people say,” he said.
