MTHATHA– What started as simple photos taken on a phone has blossomed into a professional photography brand putting Mthatha on the creative map.
You may have seen the magnificent photos of Mthatha but haven’t seen who captures them, meet the visionary behind JP Ndobs Photography Papama Ndobeni, who turned his love for capturing everyday life into a thriving career, inspiring young creatives across the Eastern Cape.
Born in Khambi Village and raised at Marhambeni Location in Mthatha, Ndobeni struggled with the traditional classroom environment and left Sinolwazi Senior Secondary School after Grade 10. Facing unemployment, anxiety and life’s temptations, photography became his escape, a way to stay focused and channel his energy positively.

In an exclusive interview with Eastern Cape Daily News Ndobeni emphasised that, “I started by taking small, ‘stolen shots’ of life around Mthatha with my phone,” Ndobeni recalls.
“Over time, those simple pictures grew into my passion and purpose.” His early work, shared on his Facebook page MthathaIsMaHomeTown, gained attention for its authentic depiction of the streets, people and daily life in the town.

Inspired by the response, Ndobeni officially launched JP Ndobs Photography in 2023, later partnering with Cash Made It Studio 2406 to expand his reach and refine his craft. “It didn’t start as a career, it grew from passion,” he explains. “Photography gave me direction, purpose and a way to tell meaningful stories.”
Despite starting with limited resources, a phone and a dream, Ndobeni’s persistence, faith and community support helped him overcome skepticism and challenges.
Today, his photography is known for its authentic, emotional and community-focused style, capturing everyday moments that reveal the spirit of Mthatha.
Looking ahead, Ndobeni envisions JP Ndobs Photography as more than a business, a creative hub for local young photographers to learn, grow and succeed. “I want to show that success doesn’t depend on where you start, but on passion, dedication and hard work,” he says.

From humble beginnings to a brand that celebrates community and storytelling, JP Ndobs Photography is a proof that talent and perseverance can transform a simple passion into a powerful creative force.
