East London designer threads her way to the top

EAST LONDON- Amandla Buswana, a 30-year-old fashion designer and entrepreneur from East London, has turned childhood creativity into a thriving business with impact across the Eastern Cape.

Founder and Head Designer of Buswana Creations, she produces custom uniforms, branded apparel and promotional products all rooted in a deep passion for art and social upliftment. Her journey began in 2003 as a Grade 3 learner at St. Anne’s Primary School, where an art teacher noticed her flair for drawing.

Encouraged by her parents, she became president of the school art club, exhibiting her work across the city and winning multiple competitions. Buswana later earned a National Diploma in Fashion Design and Textile from Durban University of Technology and completed a short business course at Henley Business School.

Now, she’s planning to pursue an MBA to scale her business further. In 2014, she registered Buswana Creations, motivated by the lack of quality uniform suppliers in township schools.

“Township learners deserve the same quality and dignity as others,” she says. Starting from her mother’s ironing board, she built the company from the ground up.

Today, Buswana leads a dedicated team of five including a driver, admin assistant and three permanent staff proving that small teams can deliver big results.

In addition the business name, Buswana Creations, is a tribute to her late father. “I wanted something that tells my story and carries my family’s spirit forward,” she explains.

Her efforts were recently recognised when she won first place at the Eastern Cape Bambelela Business Awards 2025 at on 4th September 2025 taking home R130,000. “It wasn’t just a financial boost it was validation of years of hard work.”

Looking ahead, Buswana plans to open 20 township-based outlets, expand production capabilities with industrial machinery and eventually launch across all provinces. “The response has shown us that our work is both needed and scalable,” she says.

From early drawings to a fast-growing business, Buswana’s journey is a story of creativity, resilience and purpose a clear reminder that passion, when paired with strategy, can truly transform lives.
