KARIEGA- The Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting sustainable agricultural enterprises through its funding of Langbooi Sthathu Agricultural Primary Co-operative Limited in Rocklands, Kariega.
The co-operative was founded by Ntombizanele Langbooi, who acquired agricultural land in 2002.
It currently operates on approximately 8.5 hectares and has diversified from poultry farming into chicken processing and packaging.
According to the ECDC, the enterprise received R226,666 from the Imvaba Co-operative Fund.
The Corporation stated that the funding was allocated for the purchase of machinery and equipment, as well as building materials to revamp the poultry structure.Langbooi said the support has strengthened the operations of the co-operative.
“This diversification has enabled us to add value to our production,” she said.
She added that the enterprise currently sustains three permanent jobs in manual processing and farm operations.
“The business has been built through innovation and a willingness to adapt,” Langbooi stated.
The ECDC emphasised that the co-operative demonstrates how experience, combined with determination and targeted financial support, can build a sustainable agricultural enterprise that contributes to local livelihoods.
