MDANTSANE– As South Africa celebrates Heritage Month, a local fashion designer is using traditional attire to honour culture and uplift communities.
Mkhuseli Ntshokolwana, founder of Khustas Designs is putting Mdantsane on the fashion map, one stitch at a time.
Originally from Tsomo, Ntshokolwana now calls East London home where he runs his thriving fashion label, Khustas Designs.
Although he had no early inspiration to pursue fashion, a growing passion for clothing and a desire to leave a lasting legacy sparked his journey into design. “I fell in love with fashion and wanted to put my name into clothing, so that even when I’m no longer here people will remember me through my beautiful designs,” said Ntshokolwana.
While Khustas Designs was officially launched in 2023, Ntshokolwana has been designing for over a decade specialising in traditional wear that celebrates Xhosa culture. His work particularly shines during Heritage Month, when demand for cultural garments like imibhaco increases.
However, building a traditional fashion brand comes with challenges. “The biggest challenge is competition from outside the province. Many designers, especially those from other regions, sell traditional items like imibhaco at lower prices, which affects local businesses,” he explained.
Furthmore, Ntshokolwana also expressed concern about mass-produced imitations flooding the market. “Chinese shops copy our designs and sell similar items, which damages our image as designers in the Eastern Cape. But I stay focused on my target audience and what I do best fashion.”
In addition more than just a designer, Ntshokolwana is also a mentor and community builder. He offers practical experience to young students studying fashion design, creating space for growth and innovation in the industry.
“I give opportunities to students because experience matters. I don’t look at age, I’m all about empowering everyone in this industry.”
As Heritage Month unfolds, Ntshokolwana’s journey is a powerful reminder that fashion is not just about style it’s a celebration of identity, resilience, and cultural pride.
