South Africans can now taste what’s trending on McDonald’s menus overseas, without catching flights

MCDONALD’S- South Africans can now sample some of McDonald’s most popular international menu items without leaving the country, following the launch of the fast-food giant’s World Menu Heist promotion.

McDonald’s South Africa officially introduced the limited-time promotion on 28 July 2026 at participating restaurants nationwide as part of its 30th anniversary celebrations in the country.

The promotion brings five internationally inspired menu items to South African customers, offering flavours that have until now only been available in selected overseas markets.

The line-up includes the Spicy Korean BBQ burger from South Korea, the Philly Cheese Stack from the United Kingdom, Black Pepper and Garlic McNuggets from Japan, Chilli Cheese McFlavour Fries from Canada, and the tropical-inspired Blue Hawaiian McFizz.

Eastern Cape Daily News team sampled the new menu at the McDonald’s Oxford Road Drive-Thru in KuGompo City on Monday.

Among the standout items were the Spicy Korean BBQ burger and the Blue Hawaiian McFizz, both of which impressed reviewers with their bold flavours and refreshing taste.

The Philly Cheese Stack, however, received mixed feedback. While reviewers described the burger as flavourful they found it to needing more saucy than what many South African customers have come to expect. The team suggested that a richer, more generous sauce could make the burger better suited to local tastes.

Furthmore, McDonald’s South Africa said the promotion was inspired by growing consumer interest in international menu items that frequently trend on social media platforms.

Chief Marketing Officer at McDonald’s South Africa, Keegan Alicks said the company wanted to give customers an opportunity to experience flavours from around the world.

“At McDonald’s we know our fans are constantly discovering exciting menu items from other countries through social media and online conversations. Through food we have the opportunity to celebrate cultures, spark curiosity and introduce our customers to flavours inspired by cuisines from around the world,” Alicks said.

“World Menu Heist allows us to bring some of those sought-after tastes to South Africa and give our customers a chance to experience them for themselves.”

The launch also forms part of McDonald’s South Africa’s celebrations marking 30 years of operating in the country, with the company saying the campaign reflects its commitment to expanding customer choice through innovative menu offerings.

In addition the industry analysts note that limited-time international menu promotions have become an increasingly popular strategy among quick-service restaurant chains to attract new customers, create excitement on social media and encourage repeat visits.

McDonald’s confirmed that the World Menu Heist promotion will run for a limited period only and that all menu items will be available while stocks last.

For many South African consumers, the promotion offers a rare opportunity to experience food trends that would otherwise require travelling overseas.
