DUTYWA- A total of 100 learners at JS Skenjana Senior Secondary School in Dutywa were rushed to Dutywa Health Care Centre after allegedly catching food poisoning from a chicken-based supper served at the school hostel, on 19th January 2025 Sunday evening.
According to Eastern Cape Department of Education(EC DoE) spokesperson Malibongwe Mtima, the learners ate chicken supper on the evening of 19th January 2025, with learners complaining of severe stomach aches in the early hours of the morning.
“We can confirm that 100 learners were affected by this alleged food poisoning, the school promptly informed the district about the incident,” Mtima said.
Furthermore out of 100 learners affected 91 have been discharged from Dutywa Health Care Centre and are reported to be in a stable condition. Three learners are being supervised while six have been transferred to Butterworth Hospital for further treatment.
It is alleged that a chicken served as part of the supper may have been the cause of the food poisoning.
In addition provincial education department has launched a full investigation into the matter, this incident raises concerns about food safety and handling practices in schools.
As the investigation continues, parents and guardians are urged to remain vigilant and demand answers about the measures in place to ensure the health and well-being of learners.
