In a dramatic turn of events the Department of Basic Education (DBE) has landed in hot water with the Information Regulator, facing a hefty R5 million fine for failing to comply with an enforcement order regarding the publication of matric results on the 23rd December 2024.
DBE was given a clear deadline by the Information Regulator to make an undertaking that they would not release the 2024 matric results in the media. However, they missed the mark, sparking outrage and legal repercussions.
The regulator’s spokesperson Mukelani Dimba, expressed disappointment in the DBE’s failure to abide by the enforcement notice within the specified time frame. “The department was specifically instructed to ensure that the matric results are shared only through POPIA-compliant methods, a directive that was disregarded,” he said.
Social media exploded with criticism towards the Information Regulator, questioning why they were swift to penalize the DBE but not as proactive against pesky telemarketers.
National citizens took to their keyboards to share their frustrations and opinions on the matter, creating a buzz online.
As tensions rise, the DBE has made a bold move by applying to set aside the enforcement notice, leading to a temporary suspension of the regulator’s order to prevent the publication of matric results in newspapers. The saga continues, with twists and turns keeping the nation on the edge of their seats.
