Harnessing technology for brighter Eastern Cape

EAST LONDON- The 18th Annual ICT Summit has reached its midpoint, with a successful second day of conferencing on 20th November 2024 at East London International Convention Centre(EL ICC). The event, which kicked off with a Golf Tournament on 19th November 2024, scheduled to conclude on 21st November 2024.

This year’s theme is ‘3 decades of democracy: Reflecting on the current trends and future insights within the ICT sector.’ As technology continues to evolve at break neck speed, the summit served as a vital platform for industry leaders, innovators and stakeholders to engage in thought-provoking discussions surrounding current ICT issues, emerging trends and groundbreaking ideas.

According to Imbizo Events Chairman Motse Mfuleni, “The Annual ICT Summit is not just an event; it is a catalyst for collaboration and growth within the ICT sector. This year, we were particularly excited to bring together a diverse group of thought leaders to address the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.”

Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Mondli Gungubele and Eastern Cape Premier, Oscar Mabuyane, were among the key attendees expected to address the summit.

Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane has highlighted the province’s progress in rural development, citing its role in attracting investors and improving internet access for rural communities. “Rural Development is enabling investors to come on board and to allow rural people to have better access to the internet. We have established a system that combats livestock theft in the Eastern Cape,” Mabuyane said.

The Premier’s comments come as the Eastern Cape continues to make strides in its economic development, with a focus on rural development and job creation.

Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Mondli Gungubele said, “As we move forward in this digital age, it is imperative that we prioritize the development of a comprehensive digital economy strategy that leaves no one behind. We must harness the power of technology to drive economic growth, create jobs and improve the lives of all the people of Eastern Cape.”

Chief Knowledge and Digital Officer at Coega Development Corporation Magama Makgamatho emphasized the organization’s commitment to harnessing technology to drive business competitiveness. Speaking at the 18th Annual ICT Summit, Makgamatho stated, “We are harnessing technology for business competitions and delivering a Coega perspective that is critical given the work and what we have achieved. We want to make sure that technology is a driving force competing advantage.”

This approach underscores Coega’s efforts to stay ahead of the curve in the rapidly evolving digital landscape.The summit delved into a range of topics, including cybersecurity, digital transformation and the role of artificial intelligence in driving business success.
