EAST LONDON- In a bid to revamp the city’s infrastructure, Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality(BCMM) employees have been working tirelessly to fix and patch potholes across the metro.
A major push to repair roads across the metro got underway on 12th November 2024 as part of the ongoing Operation Valazonke. Since then, teams from the Coastal, Midlands and Inland regions have been working tirelessly to fix main roads and internal streets, often putting in long hours to get the job done.
Operation Valazonke was launched in 2022 with the aim to address South Africa’s persistent infrastructure challenges.
The program has not only improved the state of roads in BCMM but also created job opportunities for many. However, recent heavy downpours have worsened the condition of some streets in suburban areas like Gonubie, Amalinda and Beacon Bay.
In response, BCMM Executive Mayor Cllr Princess Faku has called on officials to adopt an ‘all hands-on deck’ approach.
“Our road rehabilitation efforts in Mdantsane are about more than just filling potholes, we’re working to boost community mobility, improve daily life for our residents and build a better future for our city,” Cllr Faku stated.
In addition commited teams have been assembled to tackle the infrastructural challenge, with some employees working long hours and over weekends to ensure the work is completed on time. The teams were deployed to various areas, including Mdantsane, Dorchester and Vincent, to repair potholes and resurface roads.
Furthermore, BCMM’s efforts to revamp the city’s infrastructure are a welcome development for residents, who have long been plagued by potholed roads.
As the municipality continues to work towards improving the state of its roads, residents can look forward to a smoother and safer driving experience.
