Safety concerns and alleged corruption

MAKHANDA- Makana Local Municipality sudden shutdown has sent shockwaves through the community of Makhanda, exposing deep-seated issues of safety concerns and alleged corruption.

This took place on 6th November 2024 in Makhanda, Department of Employment and Labour’s inspection revealed alarming defects, including poor lighting, leaking roofs and damaged floors, prompting the shutdown of the traffic department and engineering offices.

This development comes amidst an investigation into alleged tender irregularities by the Special Investigating Unit(SIU) and Hawks, which has seized documents and equipment for audit purposes, covering successful tenders from 2019 to 2024.

The municipality’s lack of transparency and communication with local councillors has raised eyebrows, with Ward 8 Councillor Cary Clark expressing concern over the sudden shutdown.

Residents are now bearing the brunt, forced to seek vehicle and license registrations/renewals at Ndlambe local municipality.

The community is demanding transparency and effective leadership, citing concerns about the municipality’s ability to provide basic services.

Furthermore Makhanda home to a prominent university, deserves better.

According to Makana Municipality spokesperson Anele Mjekula, “Makana Municipality’s municipal manager met labour department officials twice on Monday, despite short notice. The meetings, with managers and directors, facilitated walk-throughs of municipal buildings to address concerns. Maps of all buildings and directorate information were provided to ensure transparency and cooperation.”

However, Makana Municipality and the Democratic Alliance(DA) Councillor Cary Clark expressed concern over the lack of communication with local councillors.Furthermore, the municipality has 60 days to address the structural issues, with potential extensions for external service providers.

Meanwhile, residents must seek vehicle and license registrations/renewals at Ndlambe municipality.

“This sudden shutdown raises questions about accountability and governance. Residents are concerned about the municipality’s ability to provide basic services,” said Clark.

Makhanda, home to a prominent university, deserves better. The community demands transparency and effective leadership.

For now, the shutdown serves as a stark reminder of South Africa’s municipal challenges.
