ENGCOBO– A major milestone was reached in Engcobo on 10 October 2025 with the official groundbreaking of the Engcobo Mall, led by Billion Property Group and the Reimagine Social Impact Retail Fund 1 GP.
The project marks a turning point for the rural town, bringing job creation, economic growth and hope for the future.

Speaking at the ceremony DR AB Xuma Local Municipality Mayor, Cllr Siyabulela Zangqa described the mall as a symbol of opportunity and progress. “This is more than a development it’s an investment in the people of Engcobo. We’re already seeing jobs being created and the revival of local commerce.”

Furthermore, the development is expected to create approximately 600 permanent jobs, along with opportunities for local small businesses, suppliers and farmers during both construction and operations. Despite facing delays including those caused by the COVID-19 pandemic the Mayor praised the developers’ perseverance and the municipality’s determination to see the project through.

In addition Executive Chairman of Billion Group Dr Sisa Ngebulana, said the mall would bring not only convenience and infrastructure but also pride to the community. “It’s more than retail it’s about dignity, accessibility and attracting future investment,” said Dr Ngebulana.

With construction now underway, the Engcobo Mall represents a new era for the town a catalyst for long-term economic development and a renewed sense of hope for its residents.
