Fort Hare’s picnic brings the vibe

EAST LONDON– In a vibrant celebration of culture and community, the University of Fort Hare’s Department of Student Housing and Residence Life under the division of student affairs hosted a Heritage Picnic on 14 September 2025 at Police Park field in East London.

The event offered students a much-needed break from academic demands while creating a space to connect, reflect and celebrate heritage. The initiative, spearheaded by the residence life team was designed to enhance student life in East London where residence-based activities are often limited compared to the university’s main campus in Alice.

“We wanted our students in East London to also experience the spirit of residence life, just like those in Alice,” said Aphiwe Mphompo, speaking on behalf of the Department of Student Housing and Residence Life.

He then added that, “The goal was to give them a home away from home a space where they could relax, share ideas and celebrate heritage together.”

Although the department had originally planned a broader institutional event, logistical challenges, particularly around transport, made it difficult to bring East London students to Alice. As a result, the decision was made to host a local event specifically for the East London campus.

More than just a festive gathering, the heritage picnic aimed to foster student connections and well-being. The day began with light snacks and concluded with a lunch service, ensuring that students felt welcomed and cared for.

Furthermore Bachelor of Laws(LLB) student Imamkele Nqamrha(22), shared her appreciation, “The music was really good and it helped me relieve my stress. I just needed to be here and enjoy the event.”

Lutho Mlisa a 21-year-old LLB student, echoed the sentiment. “We’re still enjoying ourselves the music is nice, we’re dancing and everything is just so good,” she said with a smile.

Highlighting the event’s broader impact, Mphompo added, “Students go through a lot its important to create spaces where they can build relationships, de-stress, and grow socially not just academically. These events help prepare students to be well-rounded individuals who can thrive both inside and outside the university.”

Marked by laughter, cultural exchange and a strong sense of belonging, the heritage picnic reaffirmed the University of Fort Hare’s commitment to providing enriching residence life experiences across all its campuses.
