EAST LONDON –The life of Melane Bhunga ‘Banqo’ Jackson a 105-year-old centenarian from Mzwini Location in Mooiplas, East London was recently celebrated at a special event hosted at the East London International Convention Centre on Friday,12 September 2025.
Although his birthday was on 09 September, the celebration brought together loved ones, community members, Mdatsane FM and the Eastern Cape Department of Social Development to honour his long life, rooted in tradition and healthy living.

Bhanqo attributed his longevity to good behavior, healthy eating and taking care of his livestock.“I have lived this long because of the healthy food I have eaten, the good behavior I have practiced and my commitment to caring for my livestock,” he shared.
During the event, Bhanqo humbly expressed his wish for a television and a cellphone to help him stay connected and informed. Mdatsane FM responded with a surprise announcement, “We’re happy to announce that Mdatsane FM will provide him with a cellphone,” said DJ Mantofontofo.
The Department of Social Development also committed to helping him acquire a TV. “We will do our best to assist Father Jackson. Supporting our elderly is a priority,” said department representative Tandisile Toto.

The celebration underscored the importance of valuing elders as pillars of wisdom. Bhanqo also shared a message to the youth.
“Take care of your body and mind and develop good habits if you want to live a long and healthy life,” he said.
His inspiring story highlights the strength of tradition, the rewards of discipline, and the power of community support.
