Tourism Month launched with township focus

MDANTSANE- The Eastern Cape government declared tourism a game-changer during the provincial Tourism Month launch in Buffalo City Metro(BCM) held in Mdantsane’s township setting.

Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency(ECPTA) CEO Vuyani Dayimani highlighted Mdantsane’s rich history as a key factor in choosing the venue stating, “We deliberately chose Mdantsane due to its profound historical significance.”

The event aimed to showcase local attractions and promote tourism growth in the province. Dayimani added, “We believe that this platform will not only showcase the area’s of attractions but also contribute to the local economy and promote tourism growth in the province.”

Representing the BCM Executive Mayor, Portfolio Head for Economic Development and Agencies, Cllr. Sixolisiwe Ntsasela, emphasized the significance of township tourism, describing it as a ‘living, breathing example of sustainability and transformation.’

Ntsasela noted that township tourism tells authentic stories, creates real jobs, supports local businesses and redefines the tourism experience. She also praised local establishments like Ekoneni Lounge, describing them as ‘symbols of township pride, innovation and resilience.’

Eastern Cape Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT) MEC Nonkqubela Pierters highlighted Mdantsane’s appeal, noting its popularity among boxers. She characterized tourism as a relationship with nature, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in maintaining visitor safety and area cleanliness.

“With approximately 6 million domestic and 250,000 foreign visitors to the province last year, the economic impact was substantial,” said Pierters.

MEC Pierters added that to boost tourism growth, the government is prioritizing road infrastructure development and collaborating closely with local communities.

The launch aimed to promote new collaborations, experiences and opportunities for the local community. Ntsasela concluded by expressing her hope that the month-long celebration would be a catalyst for growth and development in the region.

In addition, speaking on behalf of Border Kei Chamber of Business Volenti Robsin expressed support for the tourism sector, highlighting its importance in driving economic development, creating jobs and promoting cultural exchange. “Today, I want to reaffirm our collective commitment to stand behind the tourism industry to invest in it, promoting it and protecting it”, she said.

Together, government, businesses and communities must work hand-in-hand to make city of East London a top destination for visitors worldwide. Tourism diversifies local economies, creates jobs and helps alleviate poverty, making it a vital sector for growth and development.
