EAST LONDON – Authorities clampdown on non-compliant businesses yields significant results. A recent joint operation by Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality(BCMM) authorities and the Department of Home Affairs has yielded significant results, with 35 illegal immigrants apprehended and 8 salons closed down on 24th July 2025.
The operation, which targeted salons and food shops across the municipality aimed to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations as well as immigration laws.
A total of 356 notices were issued to non-compliant businesses.

Manager at BCMM Municipal Health Services Khanya Bhisholo, confirmed the success of the operation. _”Our focus was on salons and beauty parlours. With assistance from Home Affairs, we arrested over 30 salon owners and closed down 8 salons. This was an educational exercise we expect full compliance next time.”
Furthermore Studio Glam a local beauty industry stakeholder, assisted authorities during the operation. Speaking on behalf of the organisation Lwandy Ngebe, owner and founder of Studio Glam Foundation praised the initiative. “The operation was a success it raised awareness in the industry. We’re committed to helping salon owners and workers with training and documents to ensure compliance with health regulations.”

The operation serves as a warning to all businesses in the municipality comply with regulations or face penalties.
Authorities urge business owners to review their compliance to avoid closure.
