EAST LONDON- The Greenest Municipality Awards 2024/25 took place recognizing outstanding efforts in environmental management and sustainable development in the Eastern Cape. The award ceremony took place on 25th February 2025 at the East London International Convention Centre(EL ICC).
The event was attended by Eastern Cape Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism(DEDEAT) MEC Nonkqubela Pieters and Cooporative Government and Traditional Affairs(CoGTA) MEC Zolile Williams, who emphasized the importance of maintaining a clean environment and promoting sustainable development.
According to MEC Pieters, “Municipalities must clean their towns it is not just a requirement but a basic need to keep a hygienic clean environment that promotes sustainable development. Litter in the Eastern Cape as in any other region has far-reaching negative consequences on both the province’s appearance and its tourism industry,” emphasized Pieters.
MEC Williams added, “If the Towns are not cleaned by the municipality, the economy and development should be known that it will suffer.”
Six municipalities were honored for their exceptional work in various categories; Kouga local municipality took home two awards, one for Best Water Demand and Conservation Initiative and another for Best Managed e-Waste Public Drop-off Facility.
In addition, Inxuba Yethemba local municipality was recognized for its Innovative Greening Project and Outstanding Partnerships.
Nyandeni local municipality received an award for Best Management Landfill Site and Material recovery facility.
In addition Senqu local municipality won two awards, one for Best Energy Project and another for Best Innovation for Public Participation and Awareness raising mechanisms.
These awards promote a green economy, inclusive economic growth and job creation in the Eastern Cape. The recognition of these municipalities’ efforts serves as a motivation for others to follow suit and work towards a more sustainable future.
