EAST LONDON- A desperate search operation is ongoing for a 31-year-old man who went missing in the surf at Bonza Bay beach in East London on 18th January 2025, during a baptism ritual. The man’s fellow congregation raised the alarm on Saturday after their attempts to locate him failed.
The National Sea Rescue Institute(NSRI), police and emergency services joined forces with lifeguards to search for the missing man, who is believed to be from the Eastern Cape.
NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said, “Despite an extensive search of the sea and shoreline there was still no sign of the missing man.”
Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality(BCMM) lifeguards were the first to respond to the scene and launched a Malibu rescue( a type of rescue operation used to save people struggling in the water, typically in surf or rough seas) board to initiate the search.
In addition, police divers are still at sea continuing the search for the man.
Furthermore the Eastern Cape Human Rights and Missing Person Unit has voiced serious concern over the incident and is actively coordinating a response to provide support to the affected parties.
