GQEBERHA- Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency(ECPTA) launched their summer campaign in Addo, Sarah Baartman Region in Gqeberha, under the theme ‘Fall in Love with EC This Summer‘ on the 2nd December 2024. The campaign aims to highlight the province’s diverse attractions and encourage local and international tourism.
MEC for Eastern Cape Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism in the Eastern Cape, Nonkqubela Pieters has hailed the province’s remarkable resurgence in domestic tourism, citing a significant increase in visitor numbers.
“Pre-COVID, our domestic tourism traffic stood at 1.9 million visitors, today, we proudly stand at 6.9 million domestic tourists. This growth progression is a result of deliberate efforts to position the Eastern Cape as a must-visit destination,” MEC Pieters said.
With a significant increase in domestic tourism, the Eastern Cape has positioned itself as a must-visit destination, focusing on authentic experiences and supporting local Small, Medium, Macro Enterprises(SMMEs).
The province emphasizes safety and security for visitors while promoting responsible travel. The launch event showcased the beauty of the Eastern Cape and urged everyone to explore and support local tourism for inclusive economic growth.
“By emphasizing the province’s safety record, rich cultural heritage and exciting outdoor activities the Eastern Cape can be positioned as a must-visit destination for both local and international tourists,”MEC Pieters said.
According to ECPTA Chief Executive Officer Vuyani Dayimani there is a significant link between locals and tourists. Despite the rise of technology, many tourists still rely on locals for directions, particularly in areas where GPS signals are weak.
Dayimani emphasized the value of local knowledge and skills in enhancing the tourist experience, “Locals have traditional expertise, such as making bread in a traditional way and crafting doors from wood. By showcasing these skills to tourists, locals can provide a unique and authentic experience that showcases the province’s rich cultural heritage.”
The campaign aims to make the Eastern Cape a top destination, ensuring visitors leave with unforgettable memories.
