EAST LONDON- The Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality(BCMM) has extended the temporary closure of the Eastern Beach in East London, citing ongoing safety concerns. On a statement released by the metro On 15th November 2024 stated that the beach is dangerous for people to swim.
Eastern beach has been shut down since parts of it were washed away exposing rocks and creating dangerous rip currents. However, the closure has also affected school tours that regularly visit the area.
According to municipality, the safety and security cluster comprising teams from various departments, conducted an onsite inspection to assess the extent of the damage.
In addition, the inspection revealed that parts of the road and pavement have been eroded, posing a risk of further collapse, especially with cars and parking. In light of these findings the municipality has initiated an impact assessment study to determine the best course of action and mitigate the risks associated with the damaged beach.
BCMM Spokesperson Samkelo Ngwenya emphasized that the beach remains unsafe and will only be reopened once conditions improve. “The beach is continuously assessed on a regular basis and we hope to open it once it is safe to do so,” Ngwenya said.
Furthermore, municipality’s primary concern is the safety of beachgoers and the closure is aimed at preventing drownings and other accidents. While the closure may cause inconvenience, the municipality is urging the public to prioritize their safety and avoid the beach until further notice.
