A rural dream sets sail in Mbizana

MBIZANA- In the heart of Mbizana, a determined group of local visionaries from the Deep Sea Fisheries Cooperative has achieved the extraordinary. Against all odds, they’ve built a deep-sea fishing vessel from scratch, right in their rural village. This project is more than just a boat – it’s a powerful symbol of hope, potential and pride. With a history of serving their community through mechanical repairs, welding and fabrication, the cooperative had the skills and business acumen to take on this ambitious project.

All they needed was a catalyst. That came in the form of a nearly R100,000 grant from the Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC), which enabled them to acquire the necessary equipment.

According to ECDC, “A completed vessel is not just a boat; it’s a testament to what’s possible when potential is recognised and supported. Licensed by the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA), it’s ready to unlock new fishing frontiers and support broader marine and mechanical needs across the region.”

This achievement embodies the spirit of rural industrialisation, with infrastructure built by the people, for the people, now entering the formal economy with confidence and full regulatory compliance.

The Deep Sea Fisheries Cooperative’s determination and the ECDC’s investment have created a beacon of hope, showing that even in rural areas, big dreams can become a reality.
