EAST LONDON- The Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality(BCMM) has awarded 85 students with bursaries totaling R9, 9 million for the 2025 academic year.
The bursaries were handed out by BCMM Executive Mayor Cllr. Princess Faku on 20th February 2025 at East London International Convention Centre(EL ICC), this bursary of R9, 9 million will cover study tuition and registration fees, study materials, prescribed books, meals and lodging.
Furthermore of the 85 recipients 47 are continuing students while 35 will be pursuing their undergraduate degrees. The BCMM’s Bursary Fund is designed to support students from disadvantaged backgrounds with a focus on scarce skills in fields like engineering, finance, planning and scientific services.
Anathi Ndzele, a 20-year-old student from East London, Nkandla township expressed her gratitude for the bursary saying, “I was rejected by NSFAS despite my mother being a street vendor, I urge other students to study hard and make the most of this opportunity.”
Elona Madasa (19), who matriculated at Nyanga High School in Engcobo and hails from Mdantsane, echoed Nzele’s sentiments, adding, “My parents are currently unemployed, and I really appreciate this opportunity to study hard and make a better life for myself.”
In addition Executive Mayor Faku emphasized the importance of supporting students from disadvantaged backgrounds stating, “NSFAS cannot fund all students from BCMM so we felt the need to step in and provide support, we’re not only providing financial assistance but also guaranteeing internships for two years to help our students gain valuable skills and experience.”
The BCMM’s Bursary Fund is a shining example of the municipality’s commitment to investing in its youth and creating a brighter future for all.
