BUTTERWORTH- Mnquma Local Municipality has added another accolade to its growing list of achievements after receiving national recognition for excellence in human capital management and governance.
The municipality received the prestigious “Excellence in Human Capital Management and Governance Award’ from the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) at the Future of Human Resources Conference held in Fourways, Gauteng on 15 October.

Mnquma was among only five of South Africa’s 257 municipalities to receive the award, placing it among the municipalities recognised for their commitment to good governance and institutional development.
According to SALGA, the award acknowledges Mnquma’s sustained efforts to strengthen governance, accountability and institutional capacity through effective human capital management practices.

In a statement, the municipality highlighted the importance of investing in its workforce through staff development and employee wellness initiatives.
“These practices include regular capacity-building training workshops for staff, proper leave management, wellness activities and team-building exercises, all of which contribute positively to workplace productivity and a healthy working environment,” the municipality emphasised.

The municipality’s latest achievement adds to its record of recognition in local government. It previously received four Clean Audit Awards between the 2021 and 2025 financial years.

The latest accolade reinforces the importance of effective human resource management in building a capable, accountable and efficient local government institution.
Municipal officials have welcomed the award, saying it reflects the collective efforts of staff and leadership in working towards an institution that puts people first.
The recognition places Mnquma among a select group of municipalities acknowledged nationally for their efforts to strengthen governance and institutional performance.
